Indie is whatever YOU define it as. A genre. Anything released on a non-major label. Doesn't matter to me. Just looking to check out or be reminded of some great tunes.

Here are some of my favorites:

Superchunk - "Slack Motherf*cker" (greatest middle finger song of all time?)
Pixies - "Debaser", "Where Is My Mind?", "Gigantic"
Dinosaur Jr. - "Lung", "Little Fury Things", "In A Jar"
Archers of Loaf - "Web In Front", "Harnessed In Slums"
The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?"
Sonic Youth - "Teenage Riot"
Pavement - "Cut Your Hair", "Summer Babe", "Here"

Aw man. There are just too many. What would you go with?

Joy Divison – Love Will Tear Us Apart
Husker Du - I Apologize
Nights Like These – Lucero
Cut Your Hair – Pavement

(I'd add several Replacements songs, but I'm not sure if they qualify?)

Can't Hardly Wait
Here comes a Regular
Bastards of Young

there are some huge indie rock anthems out there, but they're pretty obscure; you've probably never heard of them ;)

Pretty much every song on Radiohead's "The Bends", but especially "Planet Telex" and "High and Dry".

There's a ton, but here are a few of my favorite anthems of the genre:

Built to Spill - You Were Right
Echo and the Bunnymen - Bomber's Bay
Smoking Popes - Need You Around
Reuben's Accomplice - Happy Mondays
Hey Mercedes - Eleven to Your Seven

Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom. Dinosaur Jr is commercial garbage unfortunately and hence cannot be considered indie.

Mission of Burma has a few.
Fugazi certainly does also.

Was glad to see Afghan Whigs mentioned.

and yeah, Pavement for sure.

PJ Harvey has a few that might fit, tho i suppose she is major label. She has done more then enough out-of-the-box stuff to fully give her lifetime Indie status, even if her next album should end up being duets with Philip Phillips (worst musician i could come up with, sorry).

Death Cab has a couple that "qualify", (even tho we haven't spelled out the qualifications!) tho they fall on the less punk side of the anthem line.

um others. Spooooon!

cheers

"Seven Nation Army" - Only Indie song I know that is chanted thunderously in 100,000 seat soccer stadiums.

There's a lot of pre-2000 songs on this thread. There is a lot of mainstream non-major label radio friendly indie out there. The Libertines' Can't Stand Me Now, Franz Ferdinand's Take You Out, Arctic Monkeys' When The Sun Goes Down are anthems.

James - Laid
Radiohead - Creep
Oasis - Wonderwall
Inspiral Carpets - This is how it feels
Stone Roses - I am the resurrection

I've deleted a few because even though they were great tunes I didn't think they had reached "anthemic" standard

You gotta realize indie is supposed to be independent. As in not on a major record label.
