I'm gonna say London. The Rolling Stones, Faces, The Who, The Pink Floyd. Holy crap! Good luck finding a city to match that.

Perhaps Los Angeles. Many bands have moved to LA to "make it" and so we're not from LA, but many of the LA bands were actually formed in LA by individuals that come to LA to start/join a band and/or were kicked out of a previous band. LA.

While many of the individuals are not from LA the bands tend to have been formed there.

The Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steven Stills and Don Felder are all from the same "area" , not sure on town
They may have been others ... but always surprised how many great musicians are from there

People move to cultural centers to "make it". So, places like London, LA, NYC, Nashville--most of the bands "from" there aren't from "there": it's people who moved there to be in a band. If the record industry had closed all its offices in those four cities and relocated to, oh, Tasmania, then 90% of acts would be "from" Tasmania.

Sometimes. But sometimes they change the world from closer to home. Liverpool in the 60s, Seattle in the 90s...
