    Liverpool, no contest.

From the Beatles through to the Zutons, and everything in between. Too numerous to put a whole string of bands together

The person who said Manchester - go see a doctor immediately. While we gave the world the Beatles, Manchester was producing Freddie & the Dreamers (and at the same time, London gave us the Dave Clark Five! - the Stones came a little after the Beatles, timescale wise).

I get that this is a bit of hometown rivalry coming through here, but I'm the one who suggested Manchester as particularly important to me, and since all great music didn't originate in the 60s, I don't think I require medical intervention -- at least not for that.

Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf aren't bands. If they are then Elvis Presley is a band. ....

Athens, with a population of about 100K, turned out such musical luminaries as:

    Matthew Sweet
    Vic Chestnut
    Drive By Truckers
    REM
    B52s
    Love Tractor
    Pylon
    Neutral Milk Hotel

    Marketing!

Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, and D.J Fontana are viewed by many as a band, however they may have been billed.

Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy at one point got into a little spat when Hubert Sumlin played a gig or two with Muddy, so I guess the Wolf considered himself to have to a band. And Hubert was in it and you better keep your hands off him!

Chrissie Hynde is famously from Akron. She wrote a song about it!

But The Pretenders formed in England and three of the four members were English.

While they certainly performed as a band, they were never billed that way. Elvis's later band with James Burton was certainly much different than his earlier band with Scotty Moore, but the fact is that people came to see Elvis, not his guitar player. Elvis, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters or Jerry Lee Lewis weren't bands, at least not in the same sense that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and yes, Freddie and The Dreamers, we're "bands".......

Like I said, marketing. They still were great bands.

I bet a lot more people came to see Jim Morrison than Robby Krieger. They were a band, because of the name, but Elvis’ first band wasn’t?

It’s just a thread on TGP, where the discussion is more mportant than the semantics of the thread title. I mentioned Memphis, and Elvis’ first band was one of the many that came to mind for me.

Joe Satriani was born and raised in New York, but his music career has been entirely based in the San Fran area. Before he was a known guitar player he was a master teacher to San Fran area hopefuls like Kirk Hammett, Charlie Hunter and Ler LaLonde. He is a National Anthem regular for Bay Area pro sports teams.

Then the OP should change it to "What city, or what region of a country, any country, produced the best musical acts".....

( I would still probably say Liverpool)

Stockholm also gave us The Hellacopters, Easy Action, Entombed, Blind Dog (ok, maybe not from Stockholm) and The Nomads.

    Not too shabby.
