This question pops up all of the time.
What guitar/amp/pedal etc. to get THAT sound?

The fact is that it's way more.

I think Tom Dowd put a 57 in a Folgers can to record Layla

I've never been too interested in what other people used. Couldn't afford it if I was.

The old question...would you sound like musician X if you played through their rig? Probably not.

Actually, he recorded it via long-distance telephone...

Tiim's a great player...covers a ton of ground and plays for the song, which is his gig. Super tones...thanks for the vid!

I heard someone put it once as; Stop trying to get [insert player name here]'s studio tone when you play live. There's a 99.99999% chance he can't get that tone live, either.

Interesting that Tim doesn't even have the capsules aligned on those mics.

And we won't even mention the countless and faceless thousands on gear forums and social media sites who will insist vigorously that technique (e.g., picking, etc.) has absolutely nothing to do with tone either.

For me, after plugging a Les Paul into a Marshall many years ago, I pretty much felt that I got 90% of the tones I grew up listing to on my favorite albums.

I have never heard a single person make that claim.

TBF, I haven’t watched the video yet, so I realize I could be missing the irony.

edit: watched the video. I still don’t get it.

I’m thinking you would if you kept it to a single well-strummed open E chord. After that, maybe not.

I don't like the sound of either mic. I prefer a large diaphragm condenser mic.

I thought he just used a crappy little champ amp. I know it's an iconic song, but I do not like the tones.
