I boost my 2203x with a bad monkey which sounds pretty good, I'm just wondering what else is out there. What do you use? I want something that will make it real aggressive sounding but with clarity.

There are quite a few pedals I've used over the years with those amps. Not sure exactly what you're looking for as far as tone but some of my favorite as well as popular options are.

1.) DOD Overdrive Preamp from the late 70's / Early 80's. Made famous by Yngwie, a great more aggressive tone with a nice tonal balance. The only thing I don't like about them, they can be VERY noisy.

2.) MXR 10 Band EQ pedal. Not only one of my favorite pedals to use with those amps but I know the Slayer dudes are really into them as well.

3.) Ibanez Tube King. Regular TS-9 Tube Screamers always sounded way too thin for me in front of JCM800 amps, the Tube Kings always did a good job.

4.) HomeBrew UnoMos. A better sounding MXR Micro Amp.

I haven't tried it yet but I am sure the Durham pedals will smoke through one of those amps.

Thanks. I have a mxr 10 band that I use in the loop (which I love in the loop) I tried boosting the front before with it and didn't care for it too much. I'll screw with it tomorrow though. I never what frequency's to boost or cut when I did it.

I used to use an MXR 10-band all the time with my JMP, set it to an inverted V max all the mids and roll the very top and bottom off.

These days I use either a Sparkle Drive or a ZVex SHO.

I really just do not get the Hype on the OCD. Just my 2 cents though. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good but it just really wasn't anything stellar to my ears.

Actually, I have a 2204. I use a SD-1 or a Rat. Hmmmm! This thread reminds me that I still have a Danelectro Daddy'O around here somewhere. I liked using that too because of the 3 band EQ. I'll go dig it out.

I used to use a Seymour D. pickup booster for a totally transparent boost. I never liked coloring the tone of a JCM 800 with drive/distortion pedals. I always wanted to retain the pure natural tone with just a little more hair for solo's. The SD pickup booster is perfect for that and it's inexpensive too.

Boss Blues Driver makes the best clean boost I ever heard.

And this ol fart has had a few.

You should however check out Rastaman's Clean Cut Pedal. It is an adjustable Volume Cutswitch where in you set your Volume (on the pedal) to be your Rythem sound and when you hit the Pedal it Boost Back to where you want your Solos. I'm waiting on mine to come in right now. It should be here any day. :D

If you like the idea of a transparent boost, Sean's (lovepedal) twin60 is rediculously good. Honestly.

I should be downstairs making it now instead of surfing TGP :D . Don't forget, James Peters gets the credit for the designing the circuitry, I just built and wired it. It works like a dream :dude

Glad to help. :) Here's the schematic if anyone else wants one:

    http://members.shaw.ca/petersamps/volumebox.gif

It's meant to be used in a preamp out/poweramp in type of effects loop. The input and output jacks can be combined to a "stereo" (TRS) jack, so that an insert cable can be used to run to the amp's loop.

I'll keep the file there, possibly updating it later with an LED and a battery too.
