I'll bite since it's purely subjective. I much prefer EL84 cleans in the right amp. More so than cleans from 6V6's in the right amp.

I just have this inner feeling that the 6V6 is a tube that is best suited to a good bluesy grind and feel thay are in their own territory there.

I don't even think it's close. I have never heard a real nice clean tone from an EL84 amp including a Mesa,Dr.Z,Vox AC30, I feel they saturate too early and compress. The only EL84 amp that has somewhat decent cleans in my ears is the Peavy Classic 30 or Classic 50,but I'll take a blackface Deluxe Reverb over all of them any day.JMHO

It is interesting to read all of the different viewpoints on this thread. For me, the clean 6V6 sound is what I judge other clean sounds by. I love EL84 amps, but I prefer them to be distorting a bit.

Well, I use a '66 super reverb with 7581's, but I have been jonesing for a Deluxe reverb. Something about those 6v6 amps.

My new Kingsley Deluxe 32C uses a pair of EL84s plus a pair of 6V6s, and the cleans with both of them are best. Of the two, I like the EL84s best, and that's when using RCA 6V6 GTAs. The amp can also use 6L6s, 5881s and EL34s.

Generally speaking, I'm a convert from EL84 to 6V6 amps.

Me prefers the 6v6 clean from my /13 SJT, and the saturation from my EL84 based Shiva.

I'll take el84's...the 6v6's sound too chewy and bloated in the mids for my tastes with 6v6 amps I have owned...the el84's sound more articulate in the mids to my ears...the only amp I played with 6v6's that turned my clean boat was a top hat embassy...

I prefer the jangle of the EL84 clean, even moreso with a little dirt.

Depends on what type of clean. For humbuckers, I prefer 6V6. For a strat with just a hint of hair, 84's.
