What does John Mayer do to get that subtle cocked wah like tone?

Its especially noticable when he plays intervals that clash, that snotty nasally sound.

Its ever present in his tone, what is he doing amp wise/guitar wise?

I know he typically uses pickups that scoop out a lot of the mids. It also sounds to me like he dials up the gain a bit and backs off a little on both the tone and volume knobs, but I could be completely wrong.

He’s using the tone control on the guitar. Some caps will get that sound

Are we sure he's not subtly cocking a wah somewhere? :banana

Kidding aside, I think the two above me are correct.

If you install a "wrong" value cap on your tone pot (i.e., a .022 uf cap instead of a .047 uf cap) you will get that half-wah sound where only the treble/highs are blunted but all of the mids are still present. It sounds to me like that's what he has installed.

He most likely has the tone rolled back a bit. He also tends to use the in between positions (2 and 4) which have a more nasal quality to them.

Try a Klon and a Bluesbreaker, or just get a Ceriatone Horsebreaker. It’ll get you very very close. Also having a Silver Sky gets you even closer but any good Strat will do.

    My 2c...

out of phase middle and bridge pickups. :dunno

FWIW... you can buy "cocked wah" pedals, I know EHX do one. You can also use an EQ to spike a narrow frequency band. Also Filter pedals with the rate LFO off or extremely slow.

I don't really hear any cocked wah sounds, just variations of strat tones.

Technique aside, I hear some similarities between the tones in the vids and EC live.

Sorry OT, what is the song at 11:00 mark??

You can get that sound with either cap. You'll just get it with less of a roll back with the .047.

Sounds like it's an in-between position, tone rolled back a bit, lots of mids on the amp. My good old '95 MIM strat does that kind of thing with those settings.

Whatever he's doing, you likely can't afford it.

I have some kind of auto-wah/filter pedal that does the cocked wah thing, you set it a certain way so it doesn't modulate, and then you can dial in the frequency to get that sound. Works great, and the pedal can also do the typical auto-wah stuff if you want. The setting was in the suggested settings in the manual.
