I've currently got an Eleven Rack, but I am soon planning on upgrading to an AxeFx II. The problem is, I don't know what monitoring solution is best for me. With the Eleven Rack I'm running some Rokit 5 studio monitors, but it's not working for me. I'm looking for something bigger sounding than that, the monitors don't have enough low end and they're not loud enough. I kind of want something closer to an amp in the room, although I'm not sure it's possible.
I actually used to have an Atomic Reactor 112-50 and a 212-50 as well, the one with the dock for the modelers, that I ran with a Pod XT and an X3. I ended up selling the 212-50 (too big, didn't need that much sound) and I loved the hell out of the 112-50. The Atomic was the first generation and it was tube powered with a relatively flat response 12" speaker in it and that's it, not a true FRFR type thing. That was a great rig, but when I got an HD500, the HD sounded pretty bad through it as the Atomics were designed specifically for the XT and X3 modeling technology.
I would love to get something that provided the same type of solution that the Atomic Reactor provided with my old Pods. The only problem is, I don't know if a regular old PA monitor is what will be the best solution, or something else?
The great part about the Atomic Reactor 112-50 was that it was relatively flat response, but you could run it with the cab and mics on so could get the Marshall's to sound pretty big, but also get the Tweed Deluxe to sound like a small amp. This made it feel to me like a fairly decent amp in the room situation, all the low end I needed. I definitely need something where I can run the cabinets and mics because I need the small amps to sound small, and the big amps to sound big, not like everything is running through the same cabinet.
For this reason I clearly cannot just use a regular guitar cabinet with a power amp in front of it. I was also looking into the Matrix NL12 as I started seeing amp in the room, then I noticed everyone was using it with the cab and mics turned off.
I like what I'm seeing with the Mission Engineering Gemini series amps, but getting down to basics, it's not any different than a decent PA monitor.
Did any of you AxeFX II guys ever have an old Atomic Reactor with the Pod Dock? Does a PA monitor give a relatively similar type of solution? Or is there some other product that I should look into?
