What If Marty Friedman Was Recruited For Metallica Instead?

With all respect to Kirk Hammett of course..Just for fun.

I was fiddling around with some old Megadeth last night, and I just had this random thought pop into my head..I was just thinking about how great Metallica would of sounded with Marty Friedman if they would have got him back in the day when they were recruiting a lead guitar player. In my mind's eye, he would have fit their sound..Should I duck now? .Thoughts?..And other scenarios maybe? Marty Friedman also comes across as a real classy humble dude.

They would have missed out on some of their biggest/best known songs.

Yeah it's cool to think about but they would definitely have been a different band. And not for the better (although I think Friedman is a stellar player.)

Megadeth solos are more blistering speed. Metallica are more melodic typically, which I think is more like Metallica.

You should learn the difference between simple words like “have” and “of” before you go speculating about leaving Marty out of Megadeath...

I don't care about Metallica, so I'd rather think about who might have gotten the Megadeth gig if Marty didn't-

Any of the guys from Shrapnel could've ripped it up- Derek Taylor would have added something unique.

David Chastain would have fit right in musically.
    Alex Masi
    Ron Thal
    etc.

This is where Friedman was at in ‘83. More of the power metal/fantasy sort of sound.

I don’t think the writing was on par with Mustaine, Hetfield, or Hammett at this time. Obviously the guy can play anything, but Metallica is more a band of contributors rather than a singular creative vision. His role was perfect in Megadeth, for a time.

Doug Aldrich was considered at the time.

That's interesting, and while Doug is a monster player, I don't know if he would have added the "spice" that Marty did, or the other guys I mentioned would have.

I’m not sure if Dave ever considered them. Chastain was super old and Masi was pretty young...

I know somebody that went on to be well known had the gig when Jeff Young had it. In rehearsals Dave would run new tunes and the guy said he’d have to record Dave playing it and his teacher would show him how to play it. Dave said, “who’s your teacher? I’ll just hire him”. That was Jeff Young.

Dimebag and Vinnie Paul were considered for Megadeth. That would have yielded some results.

What?? you think Hammet solos are more melodic than Friedman?!? I would have to 1000% disagree there.

Regardless, substituting Kirk for Marty would have led to much better lead guitar work no doubt but perhaps worse songwriting and less of a legacy for Metallica. Say what you will about his lead playing, but Kirk had a big hand in writing a lot of the material

Jumping Anacondas! I never knew that. What a bombastic line-up that would have made.

I love Megadeth, and I'm glad Dave recruited Marty. Their albums together are amazing.

Wah production would be down 27.3 percent, and actual wah usage would have been reduced by 32.2 percent.

That, and there would be a guy in Metallica that actually wrote melodic and uniquely phrased solos instead of a professional wanker.

    :hide2

I think Hammet is a solid dude and deserves his success, but the talent comparison isn't even close. On the other hand Marty can come off like a phallus, so...
