    ........tight? Responsive/sensitive to touch/playing?

    And what about the opposite?

What is it within the design of an amplifier that makes it so?

This enquiring mind wants to know!!! :dunno

Everything inside the amp can affect all of this. It's not really one single aspect.

The answer to all of your questions is non-linearity.

If amplifiers were always and everyway completely linear devices then they would be very simple to explain, very predictable, and very boring.

But the reality is that the different components and the various stages of an amplifer can behave in non-linear ways, and these components and stages can then interact with each other further altering the response characteristics. Making things even more confusing and detailed are the ways that the output at various stages can be fed back into preceding elements in order to further alter these behaviors.

    rectifier type (SS vs. tube)
amount of negative feedback (or no NFB at all)

Interesting topic and good responses so far.. I'll add that Class A amps are the more linear than class AB.. Also the amount of power supply filtering is a key element.

Boy it is magical, isn't it?! I am in awe of the topology that some Amp builders come up with, just boggles my puny lil mind. So many factors influence it to be sure, I dont how it could be nailed down to one or two things. Layout, lead dress, the iron used, regulating power supply, etc etc etc.... Perhaps a maniacal commitment to fantastic detail and golden ears??? dunno....

this^the power section plays a huge roll in the amps feel and responsiveness.

+1! It truly is mind boggling and just plain impressive how many amps (with their designs) are available to us!

It is magical, and it's addictive.
Once you discover something you like for yourself, rather than hearing about it from someone else, you feel like you are part of a secret club:aok

And transformers.... we won't even get started on those things!
