Only a couple of years or so ago I've gotten into watching TV shows on Netflix, and I gravitate towards mainly the sci-fi stuff, which is my weakness. Then I look up stuff on the shows, they're all Canadian! Very cool. I'm on Dark Matter right now, just about 5 shows in, and I think it's fantastic.

Because they can be made (relatively) very cheaply here.

I have to say I love watching some TV show (like Battlestar Galactica) set on an exotic alien planet and seeing all the local sights from around town.

I am sometimes more focused on spotting the local landmark than the story.

I've noticed this as well. CBC is putting out some high-quality programs. Continuum was one of the best sci-fi shows ever. Dark Matter is very good. Ascension looked good, but I couldn't get into it. Maybe should try again.

And it's not just sci-fi. Schitt's Creek is very funny.

It does make sense the country is into sci-fi though when the new PM can explain quantum computing.

Not a fan of those sci-fi channel shows - they rarely seem to have great acting, directing, etc.

There are lots of bigger budget/network shows filmed here too though - recent ones include X-Files, The Killing, Arrow, Fringe - though my favs that recently shot here are Wayward Pines and Bates Motel - both are really good.

It's cheaper to film in Canada, because the extras get paid in Exposure!
