Is the Lightning a smaller version of the HC30's 12AX7 channel? If so does it sound like it?

Any similarity between the Aiken Tomcat and Lightning?

I could be wrong, but I think the Tomcat is much more "heavy" than a Lightning. I play an Invader, and I think the Tomcat is kind of a similar type of moderate-heavy OD amp...

Like a 1/2 power version of the 12AX7 channel of a DC-30. Darn good cleans, about as much headroom as a Deluxe Reverb, distorts beautifully. It's a really incredible small amp.

They're similar. The Lightnings I've heard are a bit louder and don't have as much gain as the Tomcat (w/gain boost engaged). But they're excellent sounding amps.

Really? I thought the Matchless was a more Voxy/glassy amp and the Tomcat was a more high-gain Marshally-esque amp?

    Shows what I know. :)

    Is this Marshally high/gainy?

Nope! I guess the Tomcat kinda confuses me. As you're pointing out, it's a cleaner amp... but there are other clips I've heard that are incredibly heavy, in-your-face type tones.

Love my Invader, though! Great amp...

Good playing on this clip. I love the lead, nice vibrato...

Yup...the Tomcat does ALL that. It can be very Marshall-like and has a decent amount of gain on tap, to be sure...but if you just turn off the gain boost and knock the volume back, what you get does have some of that 'sparkly-cathode-biased-class-A' thing goin on. ;)

Thanks for the kind words too!

I'm looking at your rig stuff now. That's one HELL of a rig, man! I love how you have clips/vids for everything... More people need to follow your lead!

Your Divided by 13 sounds killer... seems to get a pretty wide array of tones, as well.

Yeah, I'm lucky enough to own a bunch of amps that are guaranteed to blow my mind each and every time I plug into one of them. Fred Taccone has got to be making some of the coolest, best sounding amps on the planet.

Back on track, actually I had a buddy from out of town over to the house this afternoon and plugged into the Tomcat for the first time in maybe two months...damn, that is a FINE sounding amp. Just a little killer!

Leon, I just listened to your TC clips for the first time in a while. They sound outstanding. Why doesn't everyone own a Tomcat?

Dave, reading the many varied posts on this forum, I've come to recognize this simple truth: some people are just not as smart or as good looking as the ones with Tomcats. :p

So I get a Tomcat and my looks and IQ are going to improve!
    I'm In :D

    As always, great playing Leon...

What does that Tomcat head weigh?

    Thanks Ken.

I'd say the Tomcat is probably around 30 lbs. All of my other amp heads weigh more.
