    I'm considering:

    • Top Boost in a Can
    • AC-tone
    • Liverpool
any others, or opinions on these?

I regret selling my MAD Effects DD30, so my eyes are usually open for one...there are only a handful. I'm picking up a Lovepedal Englishman tomorrow, we'll see how that goes.

Depends how much gain you need?

The Wampler Cranked AC and Lovepedal Englishman are both "high" gain AC type tones.

I use the Menatone TBIAC (8 knob) and absolutely love it, though I use it for low to mid gain purposes. It also has (probably) the most control over the tone you want (high mid low sag gain volume cut)

I've only used the 8-knob Menatone (which I currently own and love) and the Wampler and the Menatone IMO is far superior and far more versative.

Have only used a Liverpool, but it sounds pretty close to a made-in-England AC-30, which I've also actually used.
The Blue Bell speakers have a complexity a pedal can't possibly match, but I like the pedal, even running in front of an amp, apparently a taboo practice in polite society.

i was on the vox in a box search for a while.
IMO, menatone does the most convincing jangly, cleanish vox. the ac-tone DEFINITELY does a convincing overdriven vox. it sounds sooooo good. i miss mine.

Another 8 knob TBIAC owner here. I had the Englishman too, much prefer the Menatone, it is way more pedal.

Honestly, I think the old Boss OD-2 (the one with two drive flavors switchable only with the knob) sounds really "voxy."

My vote goes to the BJFE EGDM. The others have come and gone, EGDM remains a staple on my board.

I don't think the original 4 knob ptp wired TBIAC was ever surpassed - it sounds so much like a cranked AC30 it is frightening.

AC-Tone. I've tried a lot of Voxes and quite a few Vox-in-cans. The AC-Tone wins. For me.

So, do you just DI the pedal? I can see that would have its uses. Does it do a convincing clean tone or only driven?

How are the touch dynamics of the AC-Tone in low gain? I just got offered a slammin deal on one.

Top Boost in a Can is the best I've played. Had an 8-knob, now have a 4-knob. 4-knob is lower-gain but sounds better overall to my ears, less muddy at more extreme gain settings.

BJFe EGDM. It does the low gain Beatles thing and the higher gain May. Sounds and feels like an amp.
