What PRS model is the most quintessentially PRS

I often see PRSs compared with Les Pauls or even Strats but when PRS started it was all about making a very high quality American made guitar at a time when Fender and Gibson were not at their best. Mixing in elements of a Les Paul and Strat, Paul came up with his own unique design.

As I understsnd it the custom standard and CE were the first PRSs with the either 22 or 24 frets and then of course there was the famous Santana model. Since then PRS has produced numerous highly regarded models, the McCarty, DGT to name a few not to mention artist models.

So my question is this, if you had to pick one PRS that best sums up the essence of a PRS, what would it be.

The Custom. Later renamed the Custom 24 when PRS started making 22 fret guitars, too.

That would definitely be #1, followed by the Santana, and the McCarty. Those three still serve as the basis for a majority of their other models, which are derivative of those forms to varying degrees.

There are still quite a few others beyond that however, as their horizon is fairly broad these days.

The Custom 24 was one of their very first if not the first, right? I vote for that one too. Not my favorite, but it is the one that has had the PRS "thing" about it for the longest.

Not to derail but I hadn’t really played a PRS and played a CE 24 the other day at Guitar Center. It was quite nice. Is the Custom 24 that much better?

That's always a personal judgement call of course. I'm a big fan of the core Cu24 and owned a few, and adore the one I have. I've played a CE which seemed like a lot of bang-for-the-buck, but the Cu feels like a bit more of a luxury ride to me.

I own an SE Custom 24 Floyd and an S2 Standard 24, so neither of them would be "quintessential" PRSs. But as @AaeCee said, Custom 24s, even the Korean-made ones, feel luxurious. My Standard 24 is a ridiculously well-made guitar, but it's got a "Charcoal Satin" finish that looks sinister and feels great in the hands, but doesn't have the eye-catching appeal of the higher end Core models.

So go with what @big mike said. That's THE PRS formula.

Well, 3/5 ain't bad (it was 1986 - no one I knew at the time, or I, had even heard of PRS before I bought mine, I liked my regular top the best, and I thought the birds would just confuse me! ). :)

This pretty much nails the very first one I ever saw (Carlos) and fell in love with it instantly. A few phone calls and a 30 min trip to the nearest dealer, I started swearing profusely when I saw the price tag. A year or so later I saved up and went back to buy a lovely whale blue Cu24 and it's been my #1 for almost 30 years. I did find a yellow Cu24 (moons, not birds) not too long after that and picked it up too. Sold it to buy a late 90s Cu22 Dragon I and that was the biggest mistake in my guitar trading life. If anyone comes across my '92 Yellow Cu24 w/moons...reward

The quintessential PRS would have to be a 1985-1990 Custom (24) with birds, braz board, in vintage yellow.

Custom 24. No doubt about it.

My personal fav from PRS is McCarty though.
