I have always like LS's version of The Breeze more than Cale's original.
Blinded by the light. Manfred Manns version is much better then Springsteen's. IMO...
All Along the Watchtower
joe cocker - with a little help from my friends
Got To Get You Into My Life - Beatles tune done much better by Earth Wind & Fire.
You could say this about a lot of Dylan tunes, but this may be the perfect example of the cover that beats the original. Dylan has said so many times himself.
Also true for Jimi's cover of "Hey Joe"--the original sucks.
I was about to say--you can't beat the Beatles on their own tunes! But EWF's version is pretty amazing.
"A Day In The Life" may be one of the ultimate "unimprovable" songs, but the Timmons and Beck instrumental versions are amazing in their own right.
Whitney's version of Dolly's "I Will Always Love You".
Clearly, the #1 answer.
Nothing wrong with Bob's version, but. Ain't nothing wrong with Andy Partridge (XTC's) version, nor Dave Mathews nor several others.
But I think all the barriers went down when Jimi did what he did.
Before then, you could be Ray Charles and people would still raise their eyebrow when you reinvented something - they didn't like it much. Mostly for better, once Jimi does this, permission is granted right up until you start really stinkin' it up.
Isley Brothers' remake of Summer Breeze
I prefer Thin Lizzy's 'Whiskey in the Jar' over any previous or subsequent version.
I can't believe that nobody has mentioned William Shatner's "Rocket Man"!!!
I deeply love Otis Redding, but Aretha Franklin took "Respect" away from him and made it hers -- and an anthem.
Hall & Oates "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling". Take that with a grain of salt because I first heard it when I was 9 and that was the first version I knew but I still prefer it today, especially the little breakdown thing they do.
Statesboro Blues - Taj Mahal
Hard To Handle - The Black Crowes
I Don't Know Why - The Black Crowes
Hurricane - The Band Of Heathens
I like the Zeppelin versions better
I actually always preferred The Firms' version.
One - Warren Haynes
