What to do when you first get a guitar?

I am ordering the Epiphone J160-E. The John Lennon remake of the Gibson. It should be pretty nice from what I read and on such a minimal budget as is mine, it should work out nicely. Anyway, I was wondering... what are the first things I should do to the guitar upon it's arrival?

    :huh

I change strings and set the action and pickups how I want them, check intonation then clean and polish the guitar.

Should you live in a cold climate, let the case sit inside for a few hours before opening it. Let everything acclimate to room temperature.
Then open it...stare at it...realize that it's YOURS, and play the opening chord to "Hard Day's Night".

+1 for letting it acclimate to your room temp.

Since I must buy all my guitars online, the first thing I do after unpacking is open the case and make sure there is no headstock break. Thank God I've never had one broken
but it's still the very first thing that I check for.

First thing I do is hide it from my girlfriend, this also applies to wives!

    Tune it then start playing.

If something doesn't feel right, fix it; if not, continue playing.

    Disappointment in the seller. ;)

You have to pack them adequately, and the seller I dealt with failed to do this. It was actually a cheap guitar, one of the 90's Washburn/Wolfgang looking models. I bought it specifically to determine if I wanted to commit to a floating trem.
It was cheap, I was refunded, but still.... I bought the guitar from an established dealer on the east coast so it was just unbelievable to me how they shipped the guitar (one layer of bubble wrap and a single cardboard box). :facepalm

Dude, this is TGP. Like many forumites, I always have a new set of pickups, tuners, bridge assembly and electronics ready to go. By playing the guitar first, I might realise that I've unnecessarily wasted money on all those boutique replacement parts. Who needs that kind of added stress? :bonk;)
