It wasn't a pedal but my first purchased effect was an ADA digital delay rack unit that also did chorus and flange (not at the same time, mind you. You had to pick one and only one).

I had it for a few years until my then-girlfriend accidentally knocked it off a counter it was sitting on and rendered it useless.

It was 200 dollars if I remember correctly. I ran it through a 100w Gorilla amp I had purchased in '85 so that places the ADA in '86. It sounded glorious to me at the time! :bong

my first pedal was a RAT (probably around 1986 or so), and my second was one of the orange BOSS distortion pedals, same year...

1987 or '88 - Arion Distortion. Paid $35 for it at National Discount Music in Orlando, FL.

My solid state Fender combo had a gain knob, but I wanted to set the amp for clean sounds and then step on a pedal for distortion sounds.

1982. A DOD Flanger pedal. I asked the guy at the music store which pedal would make the coolest sounds. I still have it today and is still sounds like crap.

I built a Gibson Maestro fuzz from a schematic in the 60's. Then my parents bought me a VOX wah wah when they first came out and the Electric Prunes were doing the ad for it.
