seems like it'd depend on what kind of instrument we are talking about.

violin, electric guitar, etc etc
I mean chaman stick is lik e50 years old (but the ironwoods with screw bridges migh tbe considerd vintage)
but a viola da gamba on the other hand...

Since there are no other options, I say lock it down. Prior to 1970 only. The japanese guitars thread had to be "special cased" into the vintage forum, so maybe just also include "American only." Or just "Fender, Gibson, Martin, Gretsch, Rick only," to keep it family-friendly.

I vote '70 with the hope that at some point we'll have another sub dedicated to stuff that's not vintage per se but at least 30+ years old. The main sub gets watered down real fast and could use a bit of siphoning off IMO.

The issue becomes a double-edged sword. New sections need the traffic to survive; established forums work because of the volume of new posts. If you siphon too much from one section to another - you run the chance of messing up both sections.

Thanks again for doing this, Scott. I think we all understand why it's difficult to be a moderator, and to try to find solutions to satisfy as many members as possible. Your time is appreciated, and this is a great place to come and discuss guitars.

There really can be no debate about the actual history regarding this subject. The well-documented changes that occurred in guitar production in the latter part of the 1960's were dramatic, and by 1970 things had changed significantly. 1970 is the most meaningful cutoff date.

Definitely, but I just think there's always piles and piles of new stuff. The market has grown so much in the past 20 years that there's just a ton of things to discuss compared to the lineups of yore. I can't even keep track of how many models Fender currently produces.

I thought the last time you did this, the mods did a very good job, and it worked out great and that’s how it should stay. The purists may prefer excluding the 70’s and MIJ, but I think most felt they were reasonable compromises, especially considering the purists post about seventies guitars as well.

The forum has thrived since then and gets better all the time. Very civil, no snark and the only trolling is once a thread is trending and in come the anti-vintagers. Why change something that is operating this well. This section is well known to be popular amongst the vintage world of dealers, collectors, players pro and otherwise, and of course the enthusiasts. There is nothing else like it out there for those who enjoy the history and the appreciation of so-called vintage guitars. And thanks for even having the sub forum.

Honestly, I think the range is off. More specifically, i think it should be pre-1976 in which both Fender and Gibson made drastic changes to their build processes. Prior to that the changes were minor. While I know we discuss other brands, those are the major ones discuss here on this page And carry the most weight.

IE Gibson switched from Mahogany necks to Maple necks which effectively change each model to a compl different guitar.

Make it pre '72 as that is when Fender Stratocasters went 3 bolt neck, bullet truss rod, mazac bridge etc.

You are missing the effort the moderator team expends to keep this section civil and especially on topic.

The polls and proposed changes are due to that; this section should not be the amount of work for the moderators as it is.

It’s a tough choice for me, but if amps are included then eliminating the ’70’s overlooks some classics from Marshall, Hiwatt, even Fender if you accept some of the silver panel amps as vintage.

If we say "1970", I doubt it will be any more rigid than it is now -- there will probably occasionally be topics that bleed into the early '70s, and no one will freak out. If we say "1980", not only will it invite every late '70s 12-pound pancake LP, but it will also move the sniveling line a decade later: "but I really love my '80s reissue!"

That would be something behind the scenes that I know nothing about.

Sorry that you have to deal with these issues as I had no idea. This little forum should not be a problem for the moderators and I’m really disappointed to hear that.

Wouldn’t it be helpful to address this, especially to the regulars in this forum what specifically can be improved. Keeping it “civil and especially on topic” seems like a different issue. Anyway, appreciate the desire to improve the forum.

Shocking that this debate continues to rage on and there is seemingly little consensus about drawing the line. People just couldn't grasp the idea of an exception for the MIJ.

If it simplifies this place and keeps things focused instead of having endless threads about what should or shouldn't be in this forum, then I simply vote 1970 and earlier, and be done with it.
