What's a Good 30-15 Watt Head Besides a Budda?

I MEANT TO SAY 30-50 WATTS! NOT 15, sorry!

Got a friend who's wanting to play something better with less wattage than his DSL.

I just got the Budda SD30 II, so what's a good compliment?

    Thanks!

You're right, I forgot that too.

Black Crowes, Jimi Page and Hendrix, AIC, GNR, nothing real nu-metal, or such, but old Metallica once in a while. 80's hard rock and 90's hard rock.

    Something around $1500-$2000...or less.

    Hope that helps!

Man, there's a lot of stuff out there. The Orange rocker 30 is like 1400.00, Dr Z, I'm a big fan of Zinky/Supro, If he likes the Marshall thing there's the JVM, the 1987XL, the "new" JTM 45.
Then there's stuff like Rivera, Genz Benz, (El Diablo or Black Pearl) the Peavey JSX, Oh yeah, THD and the Krank Chadwick. That's a good start right there off the top of the noggin. That function of Musician's Friend where you can search by price is nice if you want one of the big guys. But with that kind of dough he could get something "corksniffy". If he's really got that kind of cash to drop on an amp I'm betting his biggest problem will be narrowing down choices. Man, that's a good problem to have!!!

For Black Crowes, the VVT Amps Fralin or Gries 35
    or the Category 5 Andrew.
For Marshall/Hiwatt, the Reeves Custom 30 Custom 50
    or Custom Lead.

Ceriatone Jtm45. Nik will build it with an effects loop, master volume, pretty much any mod that is avail. Or just build it stock!

Put a pedal in front for the 80's tones, or get an attenuator and crank it!

Look for a Dr. Z 6545... should be prefect for those types of tones.

Just slightly over your budget new, but definitely check out the Roccaforte Custom 30 or HG30. www.roccaforteamps.com

The 30 watters come stock loaded with 4 6V6's in the power section, but have the capability to also run 2 EL34's without a rebias to yeild 50 watts.
Even with the stock 6V6's you'd swear you were listening to EL34's. Great Master Volume as well.

Lot's of clips on the Roccaforte site. GREAT Marshall voiced amps!

The Reeves Custom 30 has a sound right between a vintage Hiwatt and a JTM 45. It's actually rated closer to 35 watts.

These amps are rugged, roadworthy all hand wired in old school Hiwatt tradition.

If you go for anything above 30-35 watts, I'd go for something with
either power scaling or a good defeatable master volume.

50 watts can overwhelm stage volume rather easily in many venues.

I brought up the Category 5 Andrew because it has built in variac and with cathode bias
allows 6V6, 6L6 or EL34's for lots of tonal flexibility.

As much as my friend would like to think he is, he's not a refined player nor does he take any time in trying out gear. So it's always been pretty much what I suggest or what he sees his friends playing...

He'll probably want to have something in the Marshall vein, so I'll have him look at the Roccaforte or the Reeves.

NOthing he can demo here in Dallas.

    THanks for the suggestions!

BadCat hotcat 30, maybe. My band covers most of what you mentioned and I use a hotcat.... seems to work out well.

You might get with teleman here on the forum. He builds a killer PTP amp at a great price that's in the ballpark of the type of amp you're looking for. Mike doesn't call an amp complete unless he's 110% satisfied with it. I have two of his amps and love to hang out at his place talking mods.
