The Chinese Valve Arts/Shuguang are the best current production KT66s that I've tried.

Antique Electronic Supply has good prices on the Valve Art tubes (the KT66 is great)

The VA EL34s are smokin' too. Just put a pair on my TopHat Super Deluxe. Amp has never sounded better to me.

The best current production KT66 is the GT KT66 HP tube. The Chinese 66 tubes lack the girth that the GT HP tube has. The only problem is the factory in Russia that was making the GT HP 66 tube has closed down & the tube is no longer being made. To make a long story short all we can get now are the Chinese 66 tubes :(

I've had the opposite experience in my Cornell DC45/50 and Fargen Bourdeaux, soundwise. "Best" is always subjective.

My experience with both 66's from GT was very uninspiring. The Valve Arts seem to be the most musical to my questionable ear.

Used to use a Valve Arts KT66 in my Univalve (that I used to own). Dug it; good sounding tubeage.

I think the Gold Lion (Russian) Reissue Genalex KT66 are possibly the best of the 2009 current crop...very genuine KT66 sound ...not a rebottled 6L6.

I used to use the Valve art, the GT HP (which was Saratov), but have now moved to the JJKT66. Say what you will or your preference, but I build many amps and can't afford failures or limited life, so the JJKT66s were/are the most reliable and solid for me. Can't say that about all JJ tubes, but KT66, and KT88 yes. And I personally like the way the sound.
Having said all that, I still have a pair of Saratov KT66 I will sell you. Or a pair or quad of the Valve art type KT66. I'll do pairs for 30, Quad (valve art) for 50.
Funny I just paired them out this afternoon and was going to put them on ebay this weekend. Email if you want them first.

The JJ KT66 are not real KT tubes, they are a 6L6 in a bigger bottle. Shuguang is the only one currently making a "real" KT66. Of course the NOS variety are real, but the Shuguang is close as it gets. The Saratov versions were also "real" but not made anymore.

The JJKT66 may sound good, byt they defineately don't have he real KT66 vibe.

    :agree

I have a pair in my Dr. Z Route 66 now and I like them the best of all the ones I tried. Shuguang would be my 2nd choice.

Read some of the other posts, the Gold Lion Reissue is also a "real" KT66. It's another New Sensor (Russian) tube.

Who sells the Gold Lion ri KT66?

Also, what is the difference between the old GT KT66-HP and the new GT KT66-C? I have a pair of the old HP's and I want a backup/replacement set.

    Thanks,
    Frank
