Looking for a combo. What's out there that might be 4 x EL84, 112 or 210 config, great clean tones, little breakup and under $1000? This combo would be used as a backup amp for gigs, for rehearsals and home playing.

I play single coil guitars, like to set the amp to clean or on the edge of breakup, and use pedals to get all flavors of dirt and time-based FX. #1 amp is a Matchless Clubman, so those are the kind of tones my ears are used to hearing.

So what's out there in a smaller package that won't break the bank or my back? Thanks in advance for weighing in.

Sounds like the Vox AC30CC in a 1-12 would work for you.

    Gibson GA-30RV or GA-30RVS

There are a lot of them.

Interesting choices. Honestly, I could care less what the 'name' says on the front of an amp. Reliability and tone are 1 and 2 for me.

Might make a trip to my local GC this week. Think they carry the Crate and the Gibson, if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for your insight.

Wow ... the 4X10 model, too! BA's are nice and I've played through the 210 version ... not enough horsepower, believe it or not.

The AD30 sounds like a KILLER choice! Can't find the darned things anywhere for a test-drive.

    Thanks.

The Laney VC30 is another choice. It sounds alot like a Vox, but is more affordable.

For just a few more bucks, you could get a Valvetech Hayseed 30 combo. Hand-wired, hand-made to your specs (combo, head, 1x12, 2x12, 2x10, tolex, grille cloth, tremolo, 'verb, EF86, etc.). Fantastic amp for the money.

The only catch is the (now) 4-month waiting list. However, Rob has hired some help, so I think the wait time might get a bit better.

Mesa Boogie DC-3. I loved the cleans on the one I had. Used a closed back Mesa Thiele cab with the EV 200 with the V30 the combo came with...awesome punch. Ultimately got rid of the amp because the OD just wasn't my style. But those EL84 cleans were awesome. I think you can score one on the bay for between 500-600 bucks.
