What's The Best AC30 Clone?

I had an opportunity to play a Hayseed AC30 clone. I was totally blown away. Real complex, 3D tones. I'm a gain guy and I really couldn't get the big gain out of the amp, but it loves gain pedals and I got some sweet harmonic sustain and crunch.

I know the Maz does the AC3o thing, but it's not really a clone

I think the Prescription does the AC30 thing better than the maz but.......that's just my opinion.

My favorite AC30 style amp that doesn't have the VOX logo on it.........

....Matchless DC30

Try the 'Amps and Cabs' forum.

Agreed. One of the things I like about TGP is that discussions are usually kept in their proper spot. One of the reasons I migrated here was the lack of thread discipline at HC -- every forum, i.e., effects, guitars, etc. seemed to have a running commentary on all gear-related topics so effects guys asked each other about amps, amp guys asked each other about effects, and so on. Much better to pose questions in the proper forum, you'll get responses from a broader and more informed population.

Assuming this gets moved, my favorite is the JMJ. I owned a Hayseed and it's a great amp but the JMJ wins out. Since JMJs aren't widely available though, I'd go with a Hayseed if I were looking now.

My favourite Vox "inspired" is the Div 13 RSA 31. I've owned Matchless too, I prefer the Div 13.

That being said, it's not a Vox clone per se...so I guess I'm not helping you out a lot.

I have a 71 Ac30 but I also own a BadCat Black Cat 30r.

It is basically a souped up ac30/dc30. It sounds fantastic and has the ef86 channel as well which gives a different flavor. The BlackCat in channel one is a fantastic ac30 sound and when you turn the gain up...unreal.

They are pricey and heavy but the added weight is the transformers they use. They are huge, but this is what helps achieve the classic badcat clean headroom and basically takes the vox chime to an even better level. If you have a chance, I would try one out.

I've heard tons of solidly positive reviews about the Nolatone Chimey Limey, although I've never played one. I'm currently waiting on a Rotten Johnny from them, so I did a thorough search of every model Nolatone makes before making my purchase. The CL didn't have nearly enough gain or EQ control for me personally, but of course I realize that the Vox isn't about that. Anyway, never read a dull or damning review of the Limey or any Nolatone amp yet...and believe me, I've looked!

I do love my MayFly BC-30. It does that voxy thing very well. Too bad Trevor stopped making them, but there is a MayFly BC-15 in the Emporium right now...not mine, though I'd like it to be.

ceriatone have only done a prototype ac30. nik states that he doesnt like the vox chassis at all, favouring a standard chassis instead
