Best AND easiest to use?? I think you really have to decide which you want... ease of use, or a bigger/better feature set.

Tell us what do you want to do with it, that will help narrow it down.

    Best: Gibson EDP
    Easiest: Boomerang+

I have one, I want the other.

    Yeah.. me too.

But I think the looper in the Line6 DL-4's even more idiot-proof than the 'Rang. Not half as versatile, tho'.

I think if I was shopping around for my very first looper/phrase sampler, I'd wait a couple more months for the new & improved Boomerang or maybe even the tiny little BOSS RC-2 that's scheduled for release in October. They've managed to squeeze almost all the functions of the RC-20XL in there PLUS a drum machine. At $179, it's gotta be the cheapest looper yet!

You should also check out Loopers-delight.com for the most comprehensive compilation of looping info available.

    I'll +1 the RC-2 for a great first looper!

Thanks for everybody's comments, I really appreciate this.

I ended up getting a Boss looper....it should arrive shortly......do I need to get a footswitch to really trigger it, or whatever?

Or can I use it as-is?

    thanks -

    Richard

Oh yeah- it's good to go right out the box. The two big footpads on top control most of the functions and the optional BOSS FS'll do things like throw 'er into reverse - which can also be done by bending down and pressing a tiny button..

Sir Ric, +1 to "Ready to go right out of the box".

    The optional footswitch will either
    (a) set the loop into reverse
    (b) switch memory settings

You can do either of these things by bending down and turnin a knob or hitting a switch.

What you can do with the two pedals (right out of the box) are
    (a) set tempo
    (b) start recording
    (c) stop recording, no playback/end recording but have playback begin immediately
    (d) start playback
    (e) overdub
    (f) stop playback
    (g) erase the loop in temporary memory

I think that covers it. Great introductory looper!
