I love my mxr evh 90 phaser, and I don't notice any tone suckage. Very nice effect for leads, especially in the "script" mode.

There is no "best". Any specific examples or descriptions of what you're looking for? The search function will also bring up numerous threads with a TON of useful info.

Retrosonic gets the vote quite often round here - it's easy to use and more controllable than say an MXR Phase 90, but can go there if nec. Very quiet too and TBP. Small footprint.

Red Witch Phaser - very flexible range of different stages, so can do Phase 90 and 100 and probably Small Stone type phaser too [although I haven't owned a Small Stone]. Can also do a fairly good vibe sound and a rather shallow Tremolo sound. A really excellent phaser but with so much on offer, and very interactive controls, can take a bit of setting up initially - I found that, although the polished finish looked cool, I couldn't tell which one of the different settings I had the cosmology set to. Words like lush, transparent, liquid all apply. Slightly bigger footprint.

    Hope this helps.

    I've tried a few -

Retrosonic - very "vibey". Capable of vibe sounds at higher settings, but isn't as vocal IMO.
HBE Psilocybe - Very deep phaser which can get really chewy and extreme. Cool for running distortion into to get some jet sounds.
Mad Professor TOP - My favorite - very flexible and vocal. Tuned for guitar.
EHX Small Stone - Sweep is too extreme for me. Low's cut out too much on one end. But not bad.
Maxon PH-9 Pro+ - Very resonanant phaser. You can hear the resonant filter going up and down. Cool for some stuff.

Two I would like to try are the Red Witch and Diamond. They are both stereo as well.

Three cheers for the HBE psilocybe!!!! It's the longest standing pedal on my board and I still love it.

The Psilocybe has lasted quite a long time on my board.

The maxon ph350 is the most versatile and best sounding on the market.

Have you tried the Mad Professor? If so, how would you compare the two?

I have no idea what is the best...if there is such a thing...

But the Mad Professor Tiny Orange Phaser is the one I like very much.
Only phaser I really like to use.

I don't believe there's a best anything but my favorite so far is the Halophaze.

I friend told me that the mad professor has no headroom and any phaser that distorts on its own is a complete piece of crap to me. Plus its about $350+ which is a little silly.

I might say the halophaze but I've been on the list for one for 21 months and I dont know that Ill get one too soon so its really hard to recommend a pedal that takes 2 years to get.

After reading this I tried and tested it with my amp and with mixing console.
My ears told me, no distortion from my Mad Professor TOP.
    :)
