Not to sound condesending in anyway, but I am pretty sure the differance between the lightback and the darkback is just that - a light or a dark back and neck.

    The darkback one's probably rarer.

The darkback looks cooler when you're playing those behind-the-head solos.

Ketchup stains are less obvious on the darkback.

Generally speaking I have found the darkback to be darker and the lightback to be....well........

These are 2 extreme examples, cause my darkback is almost black and my lightback is very light, they all varry a bit.

It's all just preference, so if you happen to like the lightback better, get that. I had a lightback and it was purty.

I always preferred the lightback because it shows the wood better. There are no bad years for R7's , and the bigger the neck the better !

I have heard Gibson started the Darkback to cover up inconsistencies in the wood...anyone?

I like dark meat on chickens, but light backs on Les Pauls.

other than color, i don't think there's any difference.

    i have a 2005 R7.

there's a thread on the LPForum regarding weight, and many commented on a little something special about that year...medium weight (avg 9-9.5 lbs), a handful (including mine) are flametops under the gold, great sounding/playing guitar.

    if i was looking for another, i'd look for a 2005. ;)

The flame under Gold can be true for any year.

    R7's are generally fairly consistant.
    Light , dark- your preference.

I have a darkback and I can still see the grain of the wood well through the stain... I can't pick out any flaws or knots...
