For all intents and purposes, it is a Fender guitar.

Entirely correct. Charvel however has a different model.

I'm pretty sure that the gilmour tribute strat by fender has a Charvel neck.

Are they? I though they were built by a contract manufacturer in Japan just like they were in the decades before the Fender deal - did they change to a new manufacturer?

That said, I'd be curious how much input the Gretsch family has in the design - for example, is Fender allowed to do whatever they want with the brand, or is it restricted to pre-agreed parameters and/or does Fender need to get agreement from Gretsch on new models?

Some of which are manufactured in CT, in the old Ovation/Hamer factory, using those employees, who are now also under the Fender brand.

Anything not made in the custom shop is just a logo slapped on a generic guitar as far as I'm concerned.

This is probably the case now since they moved their manufacturing to India, Indonesia and China. However, some of the MIJ Jacksons from the 1990s are equal, if not better, than the MIA Jacksons:

Anyway in the first article u can see how charvel's custom shop team are now working for fender.

Along the same lines, would a late model San Dimas neck and a Strat neck be interchangeable?

I seriously doubt it.
