Especially the Custom Shop. If I want some damn Artist model, something artificially aged or from a 'time machine', something gaudy/flamed/bound or some spec a dealer thinks I need, I'm covered. No joke, MOST of Fenders current offerings fit into the above. Pathetic.

If I want a straight up quality modern take on Telecaster that is as good as they can make, it's a custom order for serious money.

    Get a grip Fender.

And yet they seem to be doing just fine without you.

so... Fender offers loads of choices. Hmmmm... that's just horrible!

I don't get it? IMO, Fender's Highway One, American Special and American Standard series guitars are all simply killer... and the sky is the limit from there. They offer awesome guitars at all price points - I don't see a downside :dunno

Ughhh, maybe look at the CS Closet Classic Pro Tele? I'm sure it's overpriced though.

Can't say I agree but I understand your feeling. My humble advice, find a really good luthier in your area and source and build it between the two of you. You can do better than Fender. Trust me you can. Many of us have done so and are more happy for less money.:D

try to find a custom shop custom deluxe tele. sounds like what you are after. nice marriage of vintage and modern features. not relic'ed.

here's a 2011 on ebay (there are like 30 of em on ebay)

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Cust...E-/200689313983?pt=Guitar&hash=item2eba03e8bf

the 2012 model is updated with different woods/finishes, but the 2011 model seems more basic.

there are also plenty of boutique builders that will probably make you exactly what you want at a more reasonable price.

I think they have too much stuff. Wish they'd streamline a bit and just offer a stratocaster and let us choose from a few neck options and finishes, without having to go CS.

Think that's what the overwhelming majority of people want/order these days.

There are some NOS around, or closet classic that aren't all marked up

I would not go the Custom route, you can only spec so much, without
    HUGE upcharges,

    Wildwood has some NOS models

That's it, buddastrat. Neck options, finish options including nitro, pickup options etc. it's not difficult. It's just off the shelf stuff.

I think The STRATosphere building up a feedback of 175000 mainly from breaking new Fenders on eBay says it all really.

what's wrong with the Fender American Deluxe Telecaster?

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-american-deluxe-telecaster-electric-guitar

"The Fender American Deluxe Telecaster Electric Guitar has a new compound-radius fretboard for effortless string bending anywhere along the neck. The staggered locking tuners improve tuning stability for stunt guitarists who like to bend behind the nut. New N3 noiseless pickups provide improved Telecaster tones for snappy bell-like chime with no hum. Other features include a bound-top body with belly cut, S-1 switching, chromed brass bridge saddles, bound top and a beveled neck heel."

Don't like Fender, there at plenty of custom options. Look the up or it's just useless griping. I think their quality and prices aren't very good, so I went elsewhere years ago.

yep. it seems like the OP wants Fender to make him his own custom signature model but charge him a standard price.

    Disagree
A lot of people feel the way he does

My local store has more beat up relics, "master" built ....
With list price of $8000 or so ...

You pay a hefty upcharge for the relic'ing

Many don't like it, don't want it, and don't know where to go to get
    "just" a regular Strat.

I actually prefer the Closet Classic finish

But to find a NOS in my local store is few and far between
    Very low percentage

Sounds like Fender could do with a "Traditional " line like Gibson.

I tend to agree. I wouldn't touch most new Fenders, simply because they've stopped tinting the necks.

There are plenty of used CS models around at very good prices. No need to spend anywhere close to $8000.

You can find all sorts of used CS stuff right here on the emporium for well under $2000

You can disagree as much as you want, but we all know the old saying about wishing in one hand and crapping in the other....

I would love it if Fender made guitars with specs I like and made to the quality I now expect having played 100% handcrafted guitars and basses over the years. Too bad this will never happen. If I want it bad enough, I'll make it happen. It won't be cheap, but still way cheaper than Fender's "master built".
