    just randomly-like at a friend's house, a shop, whatever,

bridge pickup actually! I ushually play it acoustic first though and I ushually already know what pickups are in there so I know what to expect when I plug it in, ushually that will determine where i go. The neck sounds good with most strats, I find the bridge and middle pickup are much more tempermental.

Neck, then bridge, and neck and bridge (if available). Almost the only two/three positions I use on strats.

most strat players i've seen fall into 2 camps: either all over the place (srv, hendrix) or mid + bridge all the time (clapton, cray, knopfler).

i'm a tele guy, so my setting is the one a strat doesn't come with, neck + bridge.

I guess it would depend on what I'm gonna play and the sound I want.

I like both the Middle-Bridge and Middle on it's own... The middle seems to have a nice bark that the other don't have.

I go right for the neck. I'll dink around with other positions after that. I always judge a Strat by the neck pickup though.

Love the neck. I am starting to dig middle more and more. Still haven't found a bridge that makes me happy.

Middle for most things; bridge when things get nasty. Never had much use for the quack positions.

I'm in the "whatever" category. It really doesn't matter considering that 90% of the time I'm playing an electric guitar, it isn't even plugged into an amplifier. I just wander around the house with a guitar slung over my shoulders. Go out to smoke, play guitar. Sit on the couch, play guitar. It drives my wife crazy.
