    Hi All,

I'm thinking about playing around with different pre amp tubes in my Traynor. Who is a good source for NOS/New tubes that has a good knowledge of how different tubes will effect my sound?

    Thanks,
    Sam

I get them from old organs and hi fi gear. It is easy to find the old home organs in Salvation Army stores for around 20 bucks. They are full of tubes. If you are looking for good vendors there is Mike/KCA and Doug who are members here. How any tube will "sound best" for you can only be discovered by using different tubes in your particular amp. Sometimes an nos Mullard will not work as well as a common EH might.

For new tubes, the tube store is good. He keeps a record of the specs of what he sells you so you can easily replace down the road.

I usually get my tubes from Bob, the fella that builds my amps.

If he doesn't have them in stock I usually call Lord Valve. He's hoot to talk with and has all kinds of goodies.

    Doug's tubes and KCA.

I like Doug's for new preamp tubes because he carries a large selection and labels the output for both halves of the tube right on there. His customer service is above and beyond. Seriously.

Mike is also very good. I prefer him for Power tubes. His matching seems a little bit closer. Not that Doug's is bad, just my (one) experience with Mike had EXACTLY matched tubes, where my (one) experience with Doug's were tubes matched within spec, but not as close as KCA.

I would not hesitate to recommend either!

I'm a Lord Valve fan, got good stuff, tests the heck out of it and his recommendations usually work well for me... He is a LITTLE politically incorrect (he's still banned, right?).

+1 on KCA. Is it Mike? well he was really patient to answer a lot of dumb noob questions, and gave great service.

+1 on Douge as well. Good prices and good service. I like that each tube comes marked with a relative test value. I don't think it really means much on it's own, but at least it tells me how close the two triodes within one bottle are to each other, and or another tube from the lot. It's cool that the time is taken to mark it down.

I have found that shopping around at the usual suspects is a good idea, as lots of stuff is often out of stock or has price volatility. Mostly if one doesn't have the tube I'd like to try in stock, I try another guy. But Mike and Douge are always my first look.

Another +1 for Mike at KCA. He's answered every single one of my stupid questions willingly and honestly, and i know where i'll be getting some RCA's for my '66 champ next week.

I've also had good dealings with and service from Bob and Jay at eurotubes.

    cheers,
