I'm in a classic rock cover band, and my Engl Screamer is great for mid to heavy rock, but the cleans are not that great. Been looking around at several amps, such as the Bogner Shiva, Bogner XTC, Fuchs Triple Drive Supreme, Zinky Superfly, etc. Most amps have no trouble making the gain thing work pretty well, but we play about 25% clean tunes and I'm interested in which amp has the best clean - full, warm, not spikey or sharp (Engl is a bit spikey and sharp), - any suggestions?

The Fargen Dual Classic is a great amp. Excellent, rich Super Reverb cleans. I've AB'ed it many times against Supers... gain side goes from Tweed Bassman up into cranked JTM45.

If there's a different specific gain voicing you want, Ben can do it.

I only tried it in a store, but the Mesa Lonestar had a glorious clean (the one with 6l6's, not the one with EL-84's. I've heard that the distorted sounds leave something to be desired though.

oh, i remember trying a mesa maverick and thinking the cleans were great. i didn't spend much time on the drive channel, but i remember liking it at low gain settings. i've heard some complaints about the lead channel, but i've heard others have been able to tweak it to sound great...

I've got a Shiva and an OD-100. The OD-100 eats the Shiva alive for cleans and the OD is not as dark. I had a Fuchs ODS50 SLX and I liked the cleans except I couldn't get enough headroom. I've heard the TDS100 solves that problem although I've never tried one.

Suhr Custom Audio OD 100 has my vote and I have been through a bunch. No amps I have tried that offer channel switching and offer independent eq for each channel come close IMHO.

Two Rock Onyx with the CAA OD100 coming in a close second.

Demeter TGA-2 has a great warm clean, and a rocking gain channel. The clean channel is very warm and sweet sounding and has the best effects loop I've ever used, if that's of any importance to you. I would bet the current 2.1 model does even better, although I have not played one.

My co-guitarist's new-circuit Bogner Shiva 6L6 model has an incredible clean channel, along with a kick-ass gain channel. Plus, the clean channel goosed with my Menatone TBIAC is a thing of beauty for low-to-mid gain stuff.

Thanks, great info, the CAE OD100 seems very popular, I notice it has no reverb, anyone use one with a reverb tank or box??

One more vote for Suhr/CAA OD100, no reverb, but a great loop for rack verbs...
