Which high gain amp would you buy if it were your $$$

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs' started by jimmyohio75, Feb 12, 2012.

Which would you buy?

  1. Marshall DSL 50 (used)

  2. Orange Rocker 30 (used)

  3. EVH 5150 mini (new but with 15% sale at MF)

  4. Marshall Vintage Modern (used)

  5. Jet City JCA50H

I am in the process of researching a whole slew of mid-high gain amp heads. I will be using this for band practice ( in a big ass warehouse) and the occasional mid-large sized gigs. I have a Dual Terror that handles my small-mid sized gigs and home practice. As a point of reference I love my Dual Terror. Our band plays original hard rock stuff (we've been compared to Clutch). I don't like fizzy, buzzy, thin, sterile gain. I like thick, fat, punchy, raw, rude, in your face gain. Here are a few candidates. Feel free to add your own suggestion. Vote for the one that you like best. My budget is no more than $850 used. This amp needs to have at least 30-50 watts.

I'd go with a Marshall. Good luck in your search.

If I had the funds, I would buy a Matchless Independence. Another would be a Cameron Atomica.

You can go wrong with a Marshall either.

    Good luck!

    Joel

Edit: I just read your price range. I would go with a 50 watt Marshall (2204)

I have owned many. Only ONE has the high gain w/ note clarity, sustain and mojo to die for..............................SOLDANO. I sold the rest & kept the best.

Used DSL50 (~$600) or new EVH Mini would be my choice. Both sound nice, though the EVH Mini is a little more versatile (unless you need built-in reverb, which the DSL50 has).

I would probably live on channel 2 of the 5150 mini. From the clips I have heard I think channel 3 is WAY more gain than I would need.....(it's good to know it's there if I need it though). Channel 2 seems nice and crunchy.

Dual/single/mini Recto might be in your price range. I love Rectos. 5153 mini looks cool as well.

Marshall JCM2000. Pretty dang versatile imop, and one of my favorite gain tones ever.

I'd prefer the 100 watt tho.

For your budget a VHT / Fryette Deliverance 60 watt is your best bet. IMO.

Lots of love for the 5150. I'm kinda surprised. I have heard mixed reviews on these. It seems to be a love it or hate it thing. Once the new 5150 mini is readily available I will wait for the next 20% off sale at MF and try to snag one.

Jimmy - grab a Budda Superdrive. You can find good used SD30's for $850. I've been using one for 3 years now and it still surprises me how awesome it is. And don't be fooled by the 30 watts... it can get plenty loud.

I have looked at used Budda's before and the SD30's were going for around $1,000 used. I wil keep my eyes peeled for a SD30 in my price range. I played a Budda SD 30 only once but it blew me away.
