Eddie Harris' horn was fitted with a Varitone system, allowing him to easily route his signal through a wah.

Wah, that's what I hear. You could also get the same effect from an envelope filter, but you would lose control over the timng of the sweep. It would be at a fixed tempo.
So 'how do you make a guitar sound like a sax?' is the question.
I know ian Underwood used the old Maestro bug pickup unit (usually on the 'Vox Humana' setting)
He might have one of those going through the wah
Sounds like there's an octave device too maybe.
Yep, Eddie Harris had one of those too. That's probably what he was using. Might account for the octave effect.
