It took til page 12 for someone to mention Chuck Berry? Really? Almost everyone who came after him tried to copy his licks and tone. Often copied, never mastered.

Tele players like Cropper, James Burton,Roy,and Robbie all had distinctive sounds. Just heard some Pop Staples today, very unique sound. Ry Cooder,Lowell George,Duane,George for slide . Mississippi John and on and on.

How many players can play ONE note and you know. Not saying he is the "best" but B.B. has, many times, shot down (good naturedly) a lotta hot shots with that one PERFECT note.

The OP 's post asked for "the most recognizable guitar tone in the world". Most of the answers here are from musicians/guitarists who account for maybe 0.1 of the worlds population but even if we stuck to the so called "developed world" are still a huge minority of music lovers. The vast majority of them couldn't tell you Eric Johnson from Willie Johnson down the street from me or most all of the names mentioned so far but I would bet that you could go most anywhere they listen to pop/rock music and play any Santana recording and someone within hearing distance will say that's Santana. The Brian May, Yngvie, B.B.King etc will most likely be recognised by a specific "song" perhaps but the quesation asked was "tone" and Santana has without doubt the most recognized sound/tone in the world in my opinion among non muso listeners.

Tom morello? I can hear 2-3 notes for the first time and know it's one of his mike Tyson riffs. That may be more about his style though.

I think Jimmy Page is kind of the same too

    - Which guitar player has the best tone? I'd say the most recognizable would be someone like Brian May or Santana
    - Who is the greatest guitar player? There is no best, or best at what? or what genre?

    - Which guitar player has the best songs? Again there is no best? What genre? Feldner, Page, Harrison, Hendrix, etc... Are in bands that I have loved songs by, but that doesn't make them the best.
    - Which guitar player has the best gear? Best for what sound?

The problem is the word "best". Music is relative and while there are a ton of great players we have been graced with hearing some are better than others at different things. Example Michael Hedges and Jimi Hendrix are both great, but Hendrix couldn't fingerpick like Hedges and Hedges couldn't really do what Hendrix did either! Maybe say who's your fave...IDK

I'd venture to say that most didn't considering that on the very first effing page someone mentioned Derek Trucks...and the resulting pages didn't get any less obscure.

I think the fact that Dire Straits was a bit more successful here then Santana supports my previous statement. Of course not all listeners would name who is playing the guitar but more would at least recognize the band

    Cool

    Eddie Van Halen

Stevie Ray Vaughan (often immitated. Never duplicated)

    Hendrix
