I know ... I know ... SLO is the "best" ... etc. Guess I should know cuz I had one ... ;)

But seriously, just wondering who honestly likes HR50+ (or any other Hot Rod series variant) better then the SLO and why.

To make that question more complicated, anyone played the SLO, Avenger, and HR25+? With all the different models, they advertise them all as an SLO circuit....if these Amps are all SLO's, why spend for an ACTUAL SLO?

IF I can add, for the $$$, then the HR50+ was a winner for me. Money not a concern, the SLO is a superior amp in every way.

I bought an HR50+ due to the same issue. Plus I really didn't want a 100 watt amp. I fell in love with that amp and I got SLO like sounds when I wanted/needed them. I have played an SLO but never side by side. I can tell you that I still miss that HR50+ today... but I don't play a music style that really requires one. I still can see dropping $4K on an SLO, but I may someday buy another HR50+ if I can find a used one at a great price.

I really think that if you're going to shell out even on a used SLO you owe it to yourself to take an Avenger for a spin... For what you'll pick them up for - you COULD save yourself a lot of cash.

I have an Avenger and will probably slump for an SLO too - unobtanium is always shinier =)

As I said, I had an SLO and just sold it recently but played HR50 in the store once and remember loving the raw sound of it ... don't think it's a matter of "sounds better then" with these amps as much as it's a matter of taste ... was just interested in hearing if anyone else actually likes the sound of HR50 more.

I've owned the SLO , HR100+ , HR50 , Avenger 100 (with a Deyoung transformer) and i still feel the SLO is the best and smoothest overdrive amp of them all.
The Avenger i had with the Deyoung Transformers was nice when opened up but still sounded modern and more metal sounding compared to the SLO gain channel.
The HR amps are basically 80% there of a SLO but that's because they still have slightly different PCB components than the SLO design and MM transformers.
The worst nightmare of Soldano amps is their ****** effects loop design. They place it before the EQ section of the preamp and master. And it's a +4db line level loop so only a few floor pedals will work in the loop that sound good. But no matter what you use in the loop , it changes the tone of the amp.
Just a few things to think about before laying down the big cash for any Soldano amp.
YMMV

Years ago I compared the HR 100 and Slo 100 in a store. I remember the SLO was clearly better sounding and more refined.
Yes the loops are average, a Suhr Minimix fixes the loop problem.

You can't fix a loop with that if it's placed in the wrong spot.
All the minimix does is allow you to use a parallel loop . It will help the loop sound better but everything in the loop will still be pre EQ and master on the Soldano design preamp section which sounds different than most other loop placements that's after the EQ and master.
