I hear often that certain tube are brighter than others. ANybody know of some brands/models that have great definition but that are reigned in on top? Just curious.
    Peace...

I'm of the belief that circuits have more of a characteristic tone than components. :)

Tubes have characteristics you can easily hear, that are different than circuits and capacitors.

NOS RFT 12AX7s or NOS GE longplate 12AX7s.

didnt groove tubes rename one of theirs, a 12ax7c, to tame a bright amp? i think they have a chinese version of it now.

IMHO the new issue Tung-Sol 12ax7 sounds darker than most. JJs are neutral, and Chinese have a fizzy top end. YMMV

NOS GE long plates are a good suggestion, but can be microphonic in some combos due to the long plates.

True, which is why they should be bought from a pro who tests them.

I find new production EHX 12ax7s to be a lil darkish

    Amazing how much perception varies.

I think JJ 12AX7s sound darker than EH and Tung Sol.

    I agree.

I found that the JJ ECC83s/12ax7 tamed brightness better than an EH or Tung Sol.

I have a 76 JMP 100 watter that was so brite with single coils that it could take your head off, Mike suggested I put NOS RFT 12AX7's in V1 & V2 and it made a world of difference! The harsh brightness is gone and the tone is much rounder.

RFT's break up sooner if you want that with your darker.
