I don't have any spares and thinking it would be good to have a couple backups.

Just buy tested used ones, I tried the JJ EF86, $27 didn't like it. I bought 6 used ones that were tested off Ebay for $80, far better deal.

    No one. Crap. Udder crap.

Try the Dario Miniwatt. That was my fave when I had a Z28.

I wonder why some amp makers stopped using EF86's decades ago?.....:stir

Buy tested NOS ones, better quality than used, usually. And you can get them from a good reputable dealer which should help in the long run.

I've tried a few of them, including a couple NOS Mullards and a Bugle Boy which were very good. My favorite is the Miniwatt Dario in the lower right.

Not sure, but avoid the Tung-Sol and Svetlanas. I'm not sure how they would "voice" it to run best with current production EF86's. Seems like misinformation to me, but I am just guessing and could be wrong.

Allow me to illustrate with a couple links -

    New -
    http://store.tubedepot.com/ts-ef806.html ($37)
    http://store.tubedepot.com/jj-ef806s.html ($29)

    Widely acknowledged kick-butt NOS -
    http://www.kcanostubes.com/products/139/NOS-Dario-Miniwatt-EF86.htm ($49)

Spend the extra dough and get a good one.

I just installed a Dario Miniwatt ef86 in my amp. It fixed a few issues and sounds fine (for now). Apparently the ef86 is a much maligned tube <in many cases for good reason due to microphonics, rattle, etc...> Figures I will soon have 2 amps (my only 2 amps) that use ef86's in the preamp section.... oh well. Between the 2 amps it's a total of 5 tubes (between the preamp and poweramp tubes in both) so I guess I can splurge on some expensive glass eventually.

I have heard from a reliable source that any new ones come from the same factory, no matter how they are branded.

I have tried a bunch; the Darios are good but I have had the best luck with a Telefunken. Expensive (and price keeps going up) but it solved the problems I kept having with others.

If you EF86 is used in a head, rather than a combo, will the microphonics still be a problem?
