Who makes the best current production EF86 ?

    Just buy tested used ones, I tried the JJ EF86, $27 didn't like it. I bought 6 used ones that were tested off Ebay for $80, far better deal.

    No one. Crap. Udder crap.

    Try the Dario Miniwatt. That was my fave when I had a Z28.

    that's what I have now ..... maybe I'll just hope I can get a good used one somewhere. :tapedshut

    Buy tested NOS ones, better quality than used, usually. And you can get them from a good reputable dealer which should help in the long run.

    i got nos amperex ef86 which is real nice, wasnt too expensive either when you think how long they last and the quality. yet to try the 2 x anos mullard ones i bought.

    I've tried a few of them, including a couple NOS Mullards and a Bugle Boy which were very good. My favorite is the Miniwatt Dario in the lower right.

    Not sure, but avoid the Tung-Sol and Svetlanas. I'm not sure how they would "voice" it to run best with current production EF86's. Seems like misinformation to me, but I am just guessing and could be wrong.

    I just installed a Dario Miniwatt ef86 in my amp. It fixed a few issues and sounds fine (for now). Apparently the ef86 is a much maligned tube <in many cases for good reason due to microphonics, rattle, etc...> Figures I will soon have 2 amps (my only 2 amps) that use ef86's in the preamp section.... oh well. Between the 2 amps it's a total of 5 tubes (between the preamp and poweramp tubes in both) so I guess I can splurge on some expensive glass eventually.

    I have heard from a reliable source that any new ones come from the same factory, no matter how they are branded.

    I have tried a bunch; the Darios are good but I have had the best luck with a Telefunken. Expensive (and price keeps going up) but it solved the problems I kept having with others.

    Telefunken smokes.....made the left side of my SC30 obsolete!

    If you EF86 is used in a head, rather than a combo, will the microphonics still be a problem?
