He has been in that mode for a while. At Music for Monserrat (1997) everyone (Sting, Elton John, Knopfler, many others) dressed quite nice. Except Clapton in tan cargo pants and an old Nike sweatshirt (which was his go-to for a while at that time) and Sir Paul in some grey jeans and random t shirt.

Unless it's a summer afternoon, you are in the open (and thus everybody else is wearing shorts), I wouldn't dare wear shorts out of respect for my public. It needn't be a wedding gig.

If you saw those guys in that era (late 70's), you'd better understand Steve's dress. I have never seen a singer, keyboardist, front man, more active than that guy. It was an athletic event. He was in constant motion for the entire show. It was very impressive. I'd have swore drugs were involved, but knowing what I know about those guys, I doubt it.

Steve's substance abuse issues are pretty well documented.
