Why aren't s single coils twice as cheap as humbuckers ?

Is it because we are stupid enough to pay the same amount of money for it?

    Cheers,

    Adrian.

The large volume pickup manufacturers spend almost as much on the packaging as the pickup itself.

This may be the most badly worded thread title in a while.

Well - raw Materials and labor are only components of cost. Packaging, R&D Marketing, Admin, Freight costs are the same.

    I'm willing to pay.

Okay, presumably you mean "half as expensive" as humbuckers, and I assume you see two coils on the humbucker, just one on the single coil and assume that the materials cost is all you're paying for.

For starters, the materials on any pickup are cheap (especially when purchased in volume, as pickup manufacturers do). A couple of bucks at maximum, no matter whether it's a single or a dual-coil pickup. Every other manufacturer cost from there on up is about the same; labor, advertising, shipping, packaging. The difference in the cost of the wire and magnet thus becomes insignificant. Remember that you can buy pickups for less than $25 at retail, and that a whole lot of people are making money off that $25, with profit usually taken at several levels.

In the end, the fact that a pickup is single coil or double has almost no bearing on the final cost. If you want to ask the question about stupid, rephrase it slightly and ask why people are willing to pay $100-150 for a single "boutique" pickup, given that there's little or no difference in materials.

Because parts are the cheapest part of making a pickup. The amount of labor is about the same, as are the fixed costs of running a business.

[Edit: Dang. dspellman beat me to the submit button.]

    You are all wrong...
Its all depends on import price of soy.
Heavey rain fall in southeast asia, brings single coils to a humbucker prices.
JusT wait until the dry season for single coil prices to level out. Then they are twice as cheap.

It is a vast pickup makers conspiracy I tell you. They are setting high prices everywhere to enslave the working class guitar players hungry to play for free.

Just kidding of course, price is really set by market demand and the good graces of the pickup overlords.

The cost of pickups has almost nothing to do with the price of the parts or labor.
