Mayor is most certainly associated with Fender strat for his sounds, but what’s the real story about him jumping ship to go to PRS??? His new PRS APPEARS a lot like a strat,,so does anybody know what happened??? Mid-life crisis??? Just getting bored??? Needed the extra money??? Some say it was a bad move..

Mayer explains it fairly well during a podcast, let me find it.

Edit: fairly certain a pretty good explanation is in this.

yes. At the 1 hour mark

It's Mayer :p. Given that he has a net worth of $70M, I don't think money had much to do with it. Sometimes an artist just wants something different, all guitar choices are really just a question of personal preference. And anyone saying it's a "bad move" is ridiculous, it's all just personal preference so obviously he made the move he felt was right for him. He mentioned parting ways with the company because he feels the company as it is today isn't the way it was when he joined up with them, so for whatever that's worth that's his answer.

He can do what he wants, hell, I have a different favorite guitar every other day. While his sig PRS might be polarizing, I'm pretty sure it sells well...

And yet when he does solo tours he uses his Stratocaster for at least half the show.

You expect a guy with a fleet of vintage Strats to not use them?

Yeah it's almost as if guitar players like different types of instruments and enjoy varying them, using certain ones on certain songs, etc. Wild!

The clip that @Clark GriswoId posted kind of sums it up. Let's also remember that the Silver Sky is the second guitar that JM collaborated with PRS on, the Super Eagle guitars being the first, as well as a number of 594 McCarty prototypes that they have done for him. He seems to like working with Paul, and Doug Sewell on the amp side, and PRS has benefited greatly from the arrangement.

In this one interview he explained that Fender was not willing to change the body dimensions of a Stratocaster. PRS was ok to make the body a bit bigger so his head would not appear to be so disproportionately massive. This is also one reason why there’s no John Mayer live dvds around. Even with 130” screen, you can only see portion of his head.
