I would guess it came down to lack of eyeballs on the screen.
“Tonight Joan Embry from the San Diego Zoo is IN MY HOUSE!” Whoop whoop whoop whoop.
Weird, wild stuff.
Because basically it sucked.
Had a great band and musical guests though
Remember Santana sitting in with them
Eric gales band after that first album
In addition to all the things said/speculated so far... maybe his shtick got old and peeps tuned out?
Jazz Chorus glitched during the Wang Chung appearance.
With a sequela of no stereo
He returned to Zamunda with Prince Akeem and lived happily ever after
I still have an Arsenio Hall Show t-shirt I got when touring the studio around 1989 -90. They were not taping that day but got to see the place.
I think it was that one fingered fist bump thing (finger bump?) he always did with the band director guy.
he had some great music guests that you wouldn't see on other shows,, I'll give him that
I watched a lot of it. And I don't particularly remember any of it. That's probably a good clue.
I remember the In Living Color spoof of the AH show more than I remember the actual show. Did y'all know AH was friends with Eddie Murphy?
That's what I remember as well. Aresenio was a casualty of the Late Night war between Leno and Letterman. His show was pushed back from 11:30 EST to 12:30 EST.
Then Jon Stewart (younger, hipper) showed up on MTV, then Chevy Chase had his brief Fox show, which took the Fox stations from Hall. It was a pretty rough confluence of late night talkshow events for him.
I think that a lot of the reasons here had something to do with it, but I feel that he wasn't cool anymore.
Amen. I didn't really watch any of the late night talk shows, before or after Arsenio, but I watched his.
Was there this big public outcry to bring his show back? The reboot, or whatever you want to call it, only lasted 1 season.
Because his music career was taking off.
I don't dislike him but I didn't enjoy his show much. His schtick got old really fast. And late night TV is the legal residence of schtick!
I don't think I'm alone in that, some tolerated longer than I did. I think that contributed to his demise.
But I also think that being syndicated was a rough way to go, in a world of mostly network competition. Not a real good situation for long term security.
