Why do I always get so nervous when.....

    I'm turning on a newly built amp for the first time.......i tested the heaters and they're workin' fine, but I'm always a wimp when it comes to turning on the mains.....bah!!!!

    Not only that, but I keep the fire extinguisher handy too.:cool:

    Ah,have another couple of Lager's and flip the switch.:BEER
    you might want to wire your input jacks properly before you can hope to get any sound from it though.and a pilot light wouldn't hurt either.

    Just keep your hand on the switch. flip it on then off. If you didn't hear anything bad, like a hum, then flip it on longer. If you never hear anything bad, you're on your way.

    Or buy a Variac with a fuse.

    Better yet, build the "safety socket" Kevin O'Conner outlines in his book "Tonnes of Tone". It places a light bulb in series w/ the mains for current limiting in case of a fault.

    My dad was a ham (amateur) radio operator. One of his local radio club pals was going to fire up his homebrew 1 kilowatt linear amplifier for its maiden run one night. He flipped the switch and his whole house went dark. He looked outside and the whole neighborhood was dark. From outside he could the the whole town was without power. The moment he flipped the switch just happened to coincide w/ the first multi state power blackout in 1966.
