Why Hasn't Dumble Produced a Custom Shop Amp for Fender?

To me it would seem to be a win/win if say Fender approached HD(or the other way around) about him designing a Custom Shop amp. It would obviously not be tweaked for individual use and would be a "generic Dumble" but with the highest possible quality and what HD felt would be the best "compromise." It would go for a large sum, maybe 15 grand and HD would get a big chunk of it and still be able to sit semi-retired at home. He would oversee the production of course.

I would think something this logical would have already happened. How many could you sell a year? 50-100, more? It wouldn't interfere with Fender sales or HD's stable of users of his more individually tuned amps. Where is my logic askew?

I suppose the logical thing is that he doesn't want or need the money or attention.

Dumble wouldn't have any interest in doing it. For him, it's NOT about the money.

Hard to say what, exactly, it IS about, but it's not about the money. Also, Mr. Dumble is not a, er, collaborative sort of guy. He's never hired anyone to help him build amps - well, a few guys back in the Santa Cruz days, but since the '70's he's worked alone.

There are some design gurus who don't really like manufacturing - Tom Anderson comes to mind, a guy who closed his guitar company 'cuz he didn't want to run a company, he just wanted to build guitars. Dumble probably falls into that category.

But.. in the end he didn´t close it. Tom Anderson Guitarworks is still pretty much alive and kicking and Tom´s still there..

Do you have any idea how boring this scenario sounds?
    'designing a ...shop amp'
    'overseeing production'
    'best compromise'
Believe me, I have transferred research results to production. It is boring and uninspiring.

    Excellent points, Dana.

I'll add that Fender would never build an amp to Dumble's specs and I'm sure Dumble would have none of that. They'd basically just be using his name.

Does he still make amps ? When is the last time someone had confirmation he was still doing or making anything ?

Just curious....he's like a mythological amp builder. It's fascinating actually.

When he dies the owner of his amps will be very rich indeed.

    I'll stick with my Budda's :D

If its not about the money than what about all the supposed people that paid for amps and never got them from him?

IIRC there is an article in either guitar player or guitar world where they gather a bunch of boutique guys for an open forum discussion. Dumble is one of the guys and he briefly touches on the subject of a mass produced Dumble Amp. I'll have to try and find that article and see what he said.

Say what you will about Mr. Dumble, but he is clearly a man of principle. Out of anyone in the field, he could easily cash in for a lot of money. That he hasn't done so speaks volumes.

I heard he's secretly making and relic'ing a small amount of amps and selling them on Ebay every now and then.

    Kidding!

Interesting - if you find it let us know. I'd be curious when the article was printed as well.
