We're in a good size antique mall (several dozen booths). The place is fairly quiet. I'm at the end of the 1st long isle, checking out some junk (antiques), when I notice an older couple at the other end headed my way. She looked very familiar (ok... I recognized her from 50' away).

I went back to looking at the stuff in the booth. About a minute later, this lovely woman slowly walks by. As I turn around, we make eye contact. She stops. I ask, "Are you Laura?" She smiles, nods and says, "Yes, I am." Not knowing what else to say or do, I reach out, we shake hands and I ask her, "Will you tell George I said hello?" She smiles and says, "I will."

She could have easily ignored me, kept on walking, avoided eye contact, etc. Instead, she sensed that I recognized her and gave me the opportunity to exchange a couple pleasantries.

You are a class act, Laura Bush. That brief, pleasant exchange made our day.

I was checking out the guy that was hanging back about 20-30' from Laura and her companion. He looked like your average middle aged blue collar dude you would see on a bar stool, with a cold beer, watching a ball game at the neighborhood pub. I would never have taken him for secret service, if it weren't for the wire going from under his collar to an ear piece. Come on, man. Even my hearing aids are wireless, Bluetooth capable.

I wanted to ask him what he was carrying, but he probably would not have appreciate me outing him.

    Pretty cool!

FWIW, bluetooth is easy to jam. I imagine it wouldn't be likely on military-grade stuff.

Already on first-name basis. Must be a Texas thing.

Is this a Texas thing? She doesn't know who you are, so how is she supposed to tell George that you said hello?

You know... I was wondering about that, too.

I've heard a number of first person anecdotes that suggest both the Bushes are very nice people. I'd love an opportunity to meet them.

Cool story! I have often thought that it would be great to be able to meet some high level politicians on a personal, low key, social level. Just to talk with them about their experiences while in office to hear how they viewed things, without the filters of mouthpieces who speak on TV. Wouldn't matter to me what party they belonged to, just to hear their first hand viewpoints would be incredible.

Which is probably the last thing they'd feel like talking about.

    And...

How can you tell if a politician is lying?
    Their lips are moving.

I would tell Laura 'tell George I said Hello and I would like my shoe back.'

    He'll remember me.

I remember you, also. Lousy aim.

I'm right next to her (the tall one) and got to chat with her for a few minutes. She was very gracious and quite lovely.
