Just as the title says, looking for a cheaper tap tempo alternative for a Boss Delay :) Will a piano's sustain pedal work?

more than likely, yes. Most tap tempo inputs just need a momentary contact switch like a piano sustain pedal. Only issue might be with the polarity of the switch - the tempo will either be set by the depress or release of the pedal.

I've used a tap tempo for a sustain pedal on keys many a time.

I used a yamaha sustain pedal with my boss dd5 for nearly a decade. Actual prefer it over any other tap pedals. Much better feel and a nice long lead attached.

Yes, I used a yamaha with my DD7 when I first started playing electric. Looks a bit silly, but it will get the job done.

Be careful, I know with some keyboard companies (Casio IIRC) they make pedals that only work for their keyboards, therefore you have to buy a Casio pedal to work with a Casio keyboard...so some might not work with a delay pedal..

But it seems Yamaha and Korg pedals would do ya just fine.
