Wiring issues in lap steel

Drowning in lap steels
I just picked up a '50s Rickenbacker lap steel with a horseshoe pickup. It's generally in good condition, but the guts don't seem to be working correctly. The output is a bit weak and nasal-sounding, as if it were out of phase (which I know isn't possible with one coil). In addition, the tone control is acting as a second volume control.

Before I take this to someone with a better command of a soldering iron than myself, is there any chance that it's just wired incorrectly? Could someone have hooked up the tone pot the wrong way? I'm worried that the coil is shorted and needs a re-wind, but I'd much rather hear that it's a 5-minute fix.
