I have a '93 100 watt Metal with El34's and a '05 100 Watt Modern Classic also with EL34's. Both have tube buffered FX loops and are custom voiced/ modded for me by Rick. Great amps, build quality and ripping tones....![]()
Here's a clip of my Metal.......

Trust me, there is very little difference between EL34 and 6L6 Wizards. The 6L6 ones are just voiced to sound like EL34s, and they do so remarkably.
Me too Keith! We'll have to have a Wizard fest one of these days.Originally posted by SQUAREHEAD
I gotta hear Gary's Modern Classic when he gwts it, George!
I hear that one clip of yours with both amps and they sound SOOOO close it's scary. I guess I'll have to try Gary's to see which I like more, my 100 watt Metal or the Modern Classic... I'm sure I'll "feel and hear" more diff when I plug into each amp.
Love my Wizard Metal... glad I still have it!

You'll "feel" the difference for sure. It has a lot more sag to it, still tight though. Did you happen to catch the video clip of mine a couple weeks ago? That caught the Modern Classic pretty well for a camcorder mic...

I have played a lot of amps recently ... trying to "tweak" them close to that tight Wizard feel/tone.
I haven't found one that's even close...
I still want to try the VHT CLX/UL amps. I understand they are pretty darn close??!!

IMO while the VHT and Wizards both have a Hiwatt influence, they're not that close overall. VHT to me is like a modernized, gained up Hiwatt. The Wiz has the classic Marshall ripping midrange that the VHT does not, plus a tad of Hiwatt clarity on the top end. George is right in that the VHT is more modern than the Wizards. The Wizards are still far more organic and earthy than the VHTs IMO. Though the new VHT Deliverance may close the gap a little.
I'd like to hear your thought on the Deliverance George once you try it out.

I had a Modern Classic 50. It broke my heart to sell that one. I now have a Modern Classic 100. I need to tweak the tubes and speakers, but even as it sits it's a killer.
I'd like to get my 50 back if I can ever track it down. I might talk to rick about doing a Wizard-ized JTM-45 too.![]()
