What's the shortest amount of time you've seen the frets on a guitar get worn down? True workhorse wear.

To be specific, not something a dressing/level would fix, I'm talking re-fretting.

18 months. The guitar was unplayable at that point.

I need a dressing after about 16 months of gigging.

I think a lot of it is how hard you fret. I have a strat that's getting a little worn after several years, I'm sure there's plenty of life left, but I think I'm going to start buying stainless steel so I don't have to worry about it.

Sold a new condition Strat to a friend. About a year later he brought it to me to swap pickups. The 5th to 9th frets on B and G string were wore almost to the wood! Couldn't believe it!

Geez, how hard are you guys mashing down? I have a 2004 strat that gets at least 4 to 5 hours a week playtime, and it still has the original frets. They're getting flattened out on top yes, but still a good ways away from requiring a refret.

Am I just not gigging as much? This has been pretty consistent playtime since I bought the thing.

These are some crazy stories. When I was gigging/practicing a lot in my 20s I went through a set in about six years, but that was probably 1000 gigs. I can't imagine 18 months.

The original frets in my Tele lasted 16 years of constant use.
Refretted in 2002, they look almost like new thanks to a fret dress once a year.
I use 009's, have a pretty light touch.

Sorry. I couldn't help imagining that to mean something entirely different, and I momentarily felt sorry for you.

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Fret wear is how hard you pick not fret.

Heard an interview with Bryan May saying his original 'red special' has never been refretted - that's value for money!! I also heard an interview with EVH who claimed that, before he started using stainless steel frets, his guitars needed refretting every month - that is a bold claim - must have been using tin foil!!

Just short of a year when I used stainless steel strings. After switching back to nickel strings I don't notice much wear over years of use.
