Worst voiced tube amp you've played (longer than in a store)

I still have a Bolt 60. They're a hybrid amp with a solid state preamp, and two 6L6s in the power amp. The overdrive channel has a single 12ax7 that was thrown in as an afterthought, but it's just an awful, buzzy tone. Apparently, Roland was looking to compete with the Mesa Boogie Mark series. The only thing they got right was the weight.

I had one for a week. The clean channel was workable but I just couldn’t dial in good tone on the gain channel. Nothing I did sounded good at all.

I still have it somewhere in my garage. I even tried to give it away for free, because it's such a piece of garbage, but I guess they're not popular anymore.

I think the Marshall MGs are really horrible. Way worse than the old Marshall solid state amps from the '80s that actually sounded OK.

I wouldn't buy something that I didn't like at a store. My least favorite tube amp I've ever tried is the Peavey Triple XXX. I found it to be overgained, way too compressed and generally just not a sound I liked on any of its channels. Might as well be a solid-state amp for all I care.

Two Rock Classic Type 2. It looked great sitting on the speaker cab, but I couldn’t get a good sound out of it. None of the mojo of my other Two Rocks (and I’ve pretty much owned them all).

My experience exactly. It sounded great with the volume below 4, then it started producing a very unpleasant shrillness and made every pedal sound like total shite. I spent hours trying different settings, to no avail.

I know there’s a lot of Katana users and lovers out there. I’ve owned and sold a few over the years and just tried the Katana 100 head. An OK clean channel but it stops there...

I had a Boogie .50 Caliber combo a long time ago, with the graphic EQ. There was a brittle harshness that came through no matter how it was set. Funny, because a buddy had a Studio .22 that was glorious sounding.

Seems to me the only way to judge amps from perspectives in this thread is to just look at those playing brand new amps. Used has so many variables--bad tubes, other problems--that could have been the cause of issues yet the poster had no clue or didn't even look to see if it needed fixing.

Crate Quadra-Drive: Cool idea for the time, a tube/SS hybrid amp with built-in digital effects. Four channels, unfortunately they were all awful.

90's Fender HRD: Cleans were pretty good, drive channel was fuzzy mud.

Marshall Jubilee 2554 1x12 combo: I love the heads, but as a small combo with a V30 not so much. Small, boxy, grating.

Dr Z Maz 18 and EMS: I really wanted to like both of these, the demos sounded great and there are tons of glowing reviews. The Maz was returned after a few days, I kept the EMS too long to return and ended up selling at a big loss.

    Two amp jump out.

The Genz Benz Diablo was just awful. I couldn't find a good sound in that amp.

I was also very disappointed in the original Carvin x100. Decent cleans, but horrible dirt.

    Two that were already mentioned:
    • H&K Tubemeister 18 (head) - Could not get a good sound out of it and I really tried.
    • Marshall DSL40C - Bought one when Sweetwater was blowing them out a couple of years ago and was immediately disappointed with the tones on all channels. I probably should have tried a speaker swap but I just sold it quickly and moved on.
