I ordered a guitar last week from a dealer. They needed to order it from the manufacturer. Called today to find out if they had any idea when I'd get it. Girl on the phone said she couldn't find any record of the order. No charge has been made to my card. She called back and said the guitar came in today but was defective. I asked what the defects were thinking if it was just cosmetic, I'd take it as a B-stock. She told me it was so bad they wouldn't sell it to me and that they'd order a new one today.

Not a really big deal, but sounds to me like they just forgot to place the order.

Yep, sounds like somebody dropped the ball, and then instructed the girl to call you back with a story to cover their ass. I would have responded with "So the guitar you didn't order just arrived, huh? Okay..."

Could go either way, could also be a story of good customer service, they did not charge you until they received the piece and could inspect it, upon inspection they determined it was defective and did not want to pass that on to their customer. But not having the order record in the first place would raise some suspicion, but it is possible she could just not find it at that time, or that someone forgot to record your order properly in their system, which for a smaller dealer could be a real possibility depending on their system, and that when she asked around they were able to find your original order.

I guess I'll find out if she needs my address and card info again.

I'd be skeptical. But if I thought they were lying to cover a small oversight like this, I doubt I'd trust them with anything else.

Next time say - I am 10 minutes from your store - can I come over and see the guitar.
You might actually hear them sweat over the phone.

While they will sometimes put a temporary hold to confirm available credit, many (most maybe) mail/phone/online businesses will not charge the customer's credit card until they ship the order to the customer.

In the end what would that accomplish ? How would that benefit you and your situation ?

If you don't trust them now just cancel order and buy elsewhere.

Did you call to scream at her yet? That's clearly the next logical step here :)

I'll get right on that. I'll be sure to let her know how important I am and how I'll make sure they'll never sell another guitar in Florida again.

And maybe they just forgot the order (not a sin) and maybe she just didn't want to be the messenger who got shot (I have no idea how you sounded to her over the phone but you may have been intimidating to her) also not a sin.

I was nice, as was she. As I said, it's not a big deal. I'm not whining here, just making conversation.
