Xotic BB-does it sound like a Bluesbreaker pedal?

I've been thinking of building a bluesbreaker clone or getting a KoT, but I've never really considered the BB, but if it stands for "bluesbreaker", does it really sound like one?

To me the Blues Breaker pedal reminded me of a Tim. The BB Preamp reminded me of a Maxon SD9.

Really?!? I always thought of the BB as a smooth MSIAB with an active EQ. The SD-9 is a Distortion that creeps into Fuzz at higher gain settings.

It doesn't sound like a bluesbreaker pedal to me at all. I think one side of the AC+ is much closer. I use a CMATMODS Butah for a bluesbreaker pedal sound.

The BB Preamp reminds me that I should be more selective from now on. Sorry, but it just doesn't do much for me. Now CMATMODS is another story...I'd love a Butah (recently got the Brownie and Black Plague...delicious!!!).

To my ears, it does sound like a Bluesbreaker pedal, however, the gain structure is so different that you could not use it like a Bluesbreaker pedal. With the Volume around 9 o'clock and the Gain around 11 O'clock, the BB Preamp sounds extremely close to a Bluesbreaker with the Volume at 2 o'clock and the Gain dimed. I would say the BB Pre amp starting point is pretty much the Bluesbreaker topped out.

You know I never have understood this. My Maxon SD9 never really sounded to me like it approached much of a fuzzy sound as I wound the gain out. More like a less defined distortion, but nothing like what a Rat or Hotcake does (which I guess is the ultimate fuzz-tortion, right?).

Just listened to the soundclip-does sound nice. Anyone else think they sound similar? I'm on the list for a Kot but I don't know if I want to spend that much if there's a good cheaper alternative.

I don't know about sounding like the Bluesbreaker pedal, but the BB preamp can certainly simulate the Bluesbreaker amp tone pretty well. Not exactly, but no pedal will do it exactly. With my Maz JR NR and the BB preamp, I can get damn close to the Clapton tones from the Beano album.
